Approximately 33% to 46% of employees feel their managers are incompetent, disconnected from daily tasks, or do not understand their work, according to 2025 survey data. Findings show 46% of workers believe their boss only "somewhat or rarely" understands their contributions, while other studies indicate about 1 in 3 consider their managers incompetent.


Findings on Managerial Competence and Understanding:


  • Lack of Understanding: 46% of employees feel their managers do not understand their role or contributions, notes a 2025 survey by The Predictive Index.


  • Incompetence Levels: Roughly 33% of employees surveyed by Right Management believe their managers are incompetent or only marginally competent.


  • Ignorance of Daily Work: About one in three employees think their boss has no idea what they do on a daily basis.


  • Misaligned Feedback: 43% of workers report receiving feedback that is misaligned with their actual performance.


  • Undervalued Work: 48% of employees feel their contributions are undervalued by their management.


Impact on Workplace:
This disconnect leads to lower morale, reduced retention, and decreased productivity, with many employees feeling that their leaders are unable to perform the, or properly support their, daily work functions.
